The Milpa culture of Roosboom

As part of the Roosboom garden’s educational programme, a plot of Milpa combining maize, climbing beans and courgettes has been set up.

This technique of cultivation on different levels optimises the production of vegetables on a reduced surface area: the squashes run on the ground while the maize grows in the middle of the squashes and benefits from their large leaves which reduce water evaporation. Finally, the rowing beans use the maize as a stake.

The Half Way House of Dessine l’Espoir combines several vocations: to welcome the orphans of the Township of Roosboom in a house of proximity, to interest them in the garden, which participates in their diet, by enriching their meals.
